Mentoring The Future
While out on her daily "walk-about" meeting neighbors in Mount Rainier, Mayor Miles ran into a young lady she had never met before. Shimira Greene was grabbing a bite to eat at Sweet N Natural on 34th when the mayor walked in. Shimira's business partner, Dee Richardson, introduced the two.
After the mayor walked out, Shimira turned to Dee and said that she wished she would have said something to the mayor about her desire to eventually become a public official as well.
Shimira, who lives in Bowie, has been telling her wife and children for three years now that one day, she will run for president. She said her family had gotten used to her dream and plans until three weeks ago when she told her family they were going to put that on the back burner and look at something more local, like running for mayor.
Though she grew up and now lives in Bowie, Shimira said she would gladly up and move to another city or municipality here in Prince George's County. She is aware that there are municipalities and communicates throughout the county that are in need of good, hardworking, dedicated, and caring people to step up and help, and that is exactly what she wants to do.
She quickly jumped up and got Mayor Miles's attention to come back inside. Shimira told the mayor of her dream. She said how she had heard about the mayor and the things she has done and accomplished here in Mount Rainier. She then asked if the mayor would consider being her mentor. Mayor Miles not only gladly accepted but expressed how very excited she is to see the younger generations not only want to get involved, but the willingness to go that extra mile to do what needs to be done, even if it means moving out of your comfort zone to do it.
Shimira told me today it was seeing Mayor Miles walking up to people, acting as if she knows no stranger, along with knowing the mayor's history that made her see that Mayor Miles is definitely someone who could be a role model for anyone who desires to work in community service.
Come out to vote Monday. May 1st and meet Shimira and all of the other volunteers who believe in Mayor Miles and her continued work to make Mount Rainier One City, One Community, One Voice.
